College of Science Mission Statement:

To create, develop, apply, and disseminate new science; to educate the next generation of scientists; to provide a strong education in science for students of other disciplines and future teachers; to promote public understanding of science, and to become one of the finest integrated science programs in the western United States.


The College of Science is committed to proactive involvement and innovation in teaching science and mathematics to its own students, as well as to working with stakeholders throughout the state to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in the K-12 years and beyond. 

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education Coalition (STEM)

The Education Coalition is composed of advocates from over 1,000 diverse groups representing all sectors of the technological workforce – from knowledge workers, to educators, to scientists, engineers, and technicians. The participating organizations of the STEM Education Coalition are dedicated to ensuring quality STEM education at all levels.

Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME)

The Center for Science and Mathematics Education was established in fall, 2009 at the University of Utah within the College of Science and the College of Education. The mission of CSME is to facilitate, coordinate and implement collaboration between the two Colleges as well as with Utah school districts. This will happen by increasing the need for employees with highly developed mathematics science and engineering knowledge and skills, as well as, satisfy the critical need for more qualified teachers of mathematics and science. In particular, the need for highly qualified leaders who can enhance the level of instruction throughout their districts by "Raising the Floor" and insuring that all people are mathematically and scientifically equipped to contribute effectively to 21st century society.

Utah Science and Mathematics Education Consortium (USMEC)

The Utah Science and Mathematics Education Consortium is a coalition of the science deans from all the colleges and universities in the state, teamed with representatives from public education and from industry. The goal of this group is to promote programmatic cooperation among the state's institutions of higher education, as well as to develop a better dialog between higher ed and K-12 schools. These efforts are improving STEM education and the pipeline of qualified college graduates who enter the technical workforce.
