Position Description:

Project Overview:

The Utah STEM Action Center (STEM AC) was established in 2013 in the Governor’s Office, and is one of the divisions in the Department of Culture and Community Engagement.  The STEM AC is the state’s partner in ensuring optimal access to STEM resources for K-12 and post-secondary students, families, companies, and cultural and community partners.

Governor Cox has asked the STEM AC to plan for the first ever Utah Week of STEM that will celebrate “all things STEM.” He will make an executive proclamation on the first day of STEM week (most likely the first week of November) to kick it off. The only requests that he has made for the design of the week is to provide opportunities to announce private-public partnerships that support STEM efforts and focus on activities that support greater inclusion and access that help to broaden participation in STEM.

The role of an intern will include the following:

  • Support the Director of the Center in all planning activities, which can include convening stakeholders for input
  • Help to establish a planning committee, including the structure and function of the committee (e.g., subcommittees, representation etc.)
  • Help to coordinate tasks and responsibilities with committee members
  • Support communication efforts to solicit volunteers in the community
  • Attend any needed meetings with the Governor’s Office
  • Support the Utah STEM Education Foundation in soliciting in kind support for the Week of STEM activities
  • Help to create a communication and promotional strategy for the week event

Benefits of internship:

  • Opportunity to work with a team that is committed and passionate about STEM education; the STEM AC team is a collaborative and fun team that is all about doing good……with STEM.
  • Ability to create a professional network
  • Great vitae/resume addition to have worked in an organization that is in the Governor’s Office
  • Build communication, project management, teamwork and creative event planning skills
  • Opportunity to be a part of an exciting inaugural STEM event
