The College of Science Student Council is dedicated to amplifying the voices of all students within our community. Hi! My name is Sofia Perez, and I am originally from San Antonio, Texas. I am pursuing an HBS in Biochemistry, a BS in Physics and I am minoring in Anthropology! Most of the time, you will probably catch me at the Bischak Lab in the Department of Chemistry! I work with dialklyammonium salts and study the phase transitions in perovskites. In my free time, I like to bowl, crochet, and go powerlifting with my friends!

Hello! I'm Savannah Romney, and I am from Draper, Utah! I am pursuing a Biology HBS with an emphasis in Genetics and Genomics. In the future, I plan on applying to medical school with aspirations of becoming an OB/GYN. I participated in the ACCESS Scholars program and I conducted research in the Parkinson research lab. I love to play golf, hike, and spend time on the beach! I also enjoy reading, crocheting, and spending time with my friends and family.

Hi everyone! My name is Merrin and I'm from Sandy, UT. I'm working towards an H.B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in Neurobiology and a minor in History. After graduating from the U, I plan on pursuing an MD and specializing in neuro-oncology. I currently work in the Olivera Lab, where I focus on characterizing conotoxins, or neurotoxic peptides isolated from cone snails. Outside of the COS, I am a member of the JRP Debate Society here at the U, the Social Service Director for Phi Sigma Rho, and involved with ASUU. In my free time, I love hiking, making (terrible) biology puns, painting, and listening to music! Reach out with any questions about the COS, biology, etc... or if you need to hear a bad science joke.

Hey guys! I’m Isabella Gloeckner. I’m from Kaysville, Utah, and a senior studying Biochemistry with minors in Classical Civilizations and Pediatric Clinical Research. I currently work in the operating room at the main University Hospital and conduct research in the emergency department at Primary Children’s. After graduating in the spring, I plan to attend medical school, with hopes of pursuing general surgery and engaging in quality improvement (QI) research. I love volunteering at health clinics, being a part of ASUU, and coaching for Girls on the Run in my free time. On weekends, you can find me skiing, traveling, or enjoying any outdoor activity with my friends! I love meeting new people so feel free to reach out anytime 🙂

Hey! My name is Makayla and I am a senior here at the U double majoring in Atmospheric Sciences and Biology. Currently, I work in Dr. Wang’s DYCE lab in the Biology department trying to understand links between deforestation and climate patterns. After graduating I plan to pursue a MS/PhD and continue my research into the connections between the atmosphere and the biosphere! Outside of the Student Council I also serve as the President of the American Meteorological Society Student Chapter. I’m really passionate about building community in the Atmos Department and I’m excited to work with the Student Council to expand this community to the broader COS as well! In my free time I enjoy reading, crocheting, and hiking (mostly collecting cool rocks). I love to chat so feel free to reach out with any questions you have!

Hi! My name is Hannah Johnson, and I'm a sophomore here at the University of Utah. I am originally from Boise, Idaho, but I really enjoy living in Salt Lake City! I'm pursuing an Applied Mathematics major with an Advanced Financial Analysis Minor. I have loved math since I was a kid, so I'm very grateful for the chance to learn more about math every day, and especially thankful for the opportunity to represent the math department on the College of Science College Student Council. Outside of school, I also teach dance at a local dance studio and work at a math tutoring center for kids. Working with kids in both of these settings brings me so much joy! I also love to cook, bake, attend any sporting event, read, and spend time with friends and family!

Hi, I am Jaxson Carr and I am currently a fourth year here at the U of U, and my major is Physics with a Biomedical emphasis! My role in the student council is to help delegate funds given to the College of Science by ASUU and collaborate with my peers to see where we can use those funds in the physics department. I like to read, kayak, be with my family, and play board games when I am not at school or work. I am beyond excited to get to work with all students and staff in the College of Science, and make the physics department the best it can be!

My interest in this field involves material selection in high-temperature applications, additive manufacturing, failure analysis of metal components, and steelmaking. I love teaching people the importance of metals and the wide applications that they are used in. Hi there! I'm Margaret and I am majoring in geoscience (geology emphasis) with minors in chemistry and geography, as well as a GIS certificate. I am also currently doing research in Professor Pete Lippert's lab studying environmental magnetism and what it can tell us about past climate transitions. I am passionate about the environment, climate science, and science communication. I’ve been involved as a 2022 ACCESS Scholar, Crocker Science House Scholar, College of Science Ambassador, Wilkes Scholar, and now the Student Council! If I'm not in class or working in the lab, you can usually find me reading a good book or looking at cool rocks. I'd love to meet you so please say hi!

Hello! My name is Eliza, and I am a second year Mining Engineering major. I am pursuing an emphasis in Geomechanics & Spacial Analytics as well as a Geology minor. After graduation, I plan to go straight into industry. I hope to work at a mine helping to increase understanding of ore deposits. Someday I would also like to be involved in reclamation (returning a retired mine site to as close to pre-mining conditions as possible). I am part of the 2023 ACCESS Scholars cohort and currently serve as secretary of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration U of U Student Chapter. Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, weight lifting, fishing, and country swing dancing!

I currently research in Dr. Talia Karasov’s lab studying the mechanisms that tailocins use to target bacteria for the purpose of developing antibiotic alternatives. After graduation I plan to pursue a PhD in Chemical Biology. I am also currently a Beckman Scholar and a College of Science Ambassador. I have previously been involved with ACCESS Scholars and the Honors College Student Advisory Committee. Outside of academics, I love playing video games, building legos, and cooking/baking.

Sam supports all student-related activities in the College of Science, including recruitment, events, scholarships, petitions, orientation, and social media. She manages the Student Ambassador Program, developing student leaders and providing support for events in the College and its four departments. As the ACCESS Program Manager, Sam recruits applicants, facilitates selections, and manages administrative logistics throughout the year-long scholarship and research program.
