science ambassadors
Our College of Science Ambassadors are a group of University of Utah students who are passionate about science and their education. Ambassadors are leaders in our college and help with a wide variety of events, the recruitment of new students, and keeping current students engaged and excited about science.
Community
We host events for all College of Science students throughout the year. Catch us at a Taco Game Night, Dogs & Donuts, or an Involvement Fair to connect with other scientists and find your community on campus!
STEM Exploration
We facilitate events on campus for high school students from all over the Salt Lake Valley. We’ve had the pleasure of hosting the PATHS Program, several local Boys & Girls Clubs, and other school groups over the years.
Mentoring
Starting in 2022, we mentor first year students in our Science Themed Communities on campus. We provide support and resources to help make the transition to the U as smooth as possible and set our first year students up for success!
Outreach
One of our favorite opportunities is getting to go out to local elementary and middle schools to do activities or experiments with younger students. We’ve had a blast at STEM and STEAM Days as well as career exploration fairs.

Biochemistry | she/herHey! I'm Abby Niwa (pronounced knee-wa), I'm currently earning a Honors BS in Biochemistry and am still deciding on a minor(s). I'm in the ACCESS Scholars Program and am currently working in David Grunwald's lab at the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics where I study genetics using Zebrafish. I love hiking, painting, ceramics, camping, and anything that involves the outdoors or making things. After my undergrad I hope to attend medical school and eventually become an emergency medicine physician. You'll probably spot me on campus running to class so shout hey!

I am currently working in the Mulvey lab, where I am researching the shedding rate of flagellin in different strains of E. coli to see if it correlates to the severity of sepsis in patients at the hospital. I got involved in research through the ACCESS program, and I am also the Sugihara Scholar in the Crocker Science House for 2024-25. After obtaining my undergraduate degree, I plan on attending medical school and becoming a doctor. In my free time, I love playing piano, reading, powerlifting, and going to the symphony.

Post-grad, I hope to attend medical school and work in geriatrics, primarily interested in focusing on degenerative diseases. In the College of Science, I've worked as a TA. Outside of this, I stay active on campus by volunteering at Connect2Health with the University of Utah hospital and being an Honors first-year peer mentor. After graduating, I hope to attend medical school and become a neonatal surgeon. I was born and raised in Pakistan, so I hope to give back to communities in South Asia that lack adequate medical care and resources. Currently, I am working as an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Werner's Lab, studying phenotypic plasticity as a result of environmental factors experienced during development in nematodes. I also serve as the secretary of the Pakistani Student Association here at the U. I enjoy traveling and have learned so much through my study of Spanish in Spain. I'm excited to continue my international travels by researching ecology in Kenya in the future. I have been involved with the College of Science a few times in the past - I was part of the SRI program in Joshua Scholl's ant-plant mutualism lab and worked with Dr. Ritterbush in her ammonite based hydrodynamics lab (called AMMLab). After I graduate, I hope to go into museum collection managment. I am an avid rock hounder, collector, and hiker. I also enjoy doing textile arts such as embroidery, sewing, knitting, and sashiko. If you're ever in the FASB (Geology building), there's a good chance you will see me in my hand-patched jacket.

Biology | she/herHi, my name is Lindsey! I'm originally from a little town in Colorado, but my passion for science brought me to Salt Lake City to pursue my undergraduate degree at the U. I'm majoring in biology with an emphasis in genetics & genomics and minoring in chemistry. I also work as a TA, which I really enjoy! I love teaching people about all things biology. After finishing my BS, I plan on getting a PhD and contributing to genetics & bioethics research. Outside of the College of Science, you can find me swinging upside down for fun in various aerial apparatuses, playing my cello, or reading a good book.
