The Beaver Stream: How beavers impact the water cycle in the Wasatch Mountains

Analytical/Physical Chemistry, Climate Science, Geology

Beavers are the ultimate engineers of their environments, and one key environmental service these engineers provide is the storage of water in their ponds. In this stream, we seek to understand how beavers help slow the loss of water from the Wasatch Mountains, and if we can reliably replicate that service with man-made structures. We use stable isotope geochemistry to trace water throughout the ecosystem, and to try to understand how much water is lost from evaporation off of beaver ponds. This team will work with researchers from two other universities, have the opportunity to do field-based research, and learn a wide range of lab skills.
