Antimicrobials from the soil
Biochemistry, Microbiology, Organic Chemistry, Pharmacology
Soil bacteria live in a competitive environment, constantly battling each other for resources. To survive, they produce special chemicals called natural products, which can help them fight off other microbes. Our lab studies these natural products to discover new antimicrobial compounds. We focus on understudied bacteria, like those that can eat methanol, because they may produce antimicrobials that were missed by past discovery campaigns. By exploring these microbes and the chemicals they make, we work at the exciting intersection of biology and chemistry. This research could help us find new antibiotics for fighting infections, which are urgently needed.
