The University of Utah Department of Atmospheric Sciences is the leading program of weather and climate related research and education in the Intermountain West and is recognized internationally for its expertise in cloud-climate interactions, mountain meteorology, climate physics and dynamics, weather and climate modeling, and tropical meteorology. Our research and teaching endeavors provide the knowledge and tools needed by society to address the challenges posed by hazardous weather and climate change in the 21st century. We are a student-centered department with faculty who are dedicated graduate student mentors and classroom instructors. Several of our professors have won college or university-wide teaching awards.

We offer a minor, B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences. The minor introduces students to the impacts of the atmosphere upon society and enables students to apply scientific principles in an interdisciplinary way. Our undergraduate major uniquely emphasizes mountain weather and climate, which is a natural extension of the geographic setting of the University of Utah. At the graduate level we offer a comprehensive education in the atmospheric and related sciences and enable students to develop the intellectual and critical analysis skills needed to conduct independent research in a specialized area of study. Our alumni include broadcast meteorologists, National Weather Service and military meteorologists, scientists and engineers at environmental consulting firms, university professors, and even the Director of Weather for the U.S. Air Force.

Majoring in chemistry opens the door to many different pursuits including a myriad of positions as a chemists in private industry, government or education; pursuing professional training in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or other health-related fields; or working in areas such as environmental science and engineering, forensics, business and law. The Department offers a wide range of degree options to suit the interests and future plans of our diverse and multi-talented students. A major whose future plans include working in the chemical industry or attending graduate school in chemistry or a closely related field may choose to pursue a more traditional Bachelors of Arts or Science (BA or BS) degree following the Professional Program or the Interdisciplinary Chemical Biology Program. Other interdisciplinary options are also available linking chemistry with Mathematics, Physics, Geology, Business, Teaching, and Materials Sciences and Engineering. Majors are encouraged to engage in cutting edge research with our world-renowned faculty. Many undergraduates travel to local, regional and national scientific meetings to present their findings and some publish their results in well-respected scientific journals. The Department offers many other opportunities to connect with others in the chemical community including an active chemistry club, general and organic chemistry help rooms, and job opportunities.

The U is the number one educator of science students among Utah System of Higher Education institutions.

Every astronomer, every engineer, every nurse and doctor, every scientist and chemist, every bio lab technician and statistician created at the U must first pass through the College of Science in preparation for a STEM-based career.

This year, more students and their families are experiencing economic hardship and the need for financial aid is growing. Your gift can make a difference by supporting students and fueling groundbreaking research.
