The College of Science Student Council is dedicated to amplifying the voices of all students within our community. In pursuit of fostering safe and supportive educational environments, we are committed to providing opportunities for meaningful engagement and collaboration among our students. Thank you for your interest in joining your Department Committee! Each Department Committee is overseen by its Department Representative, who works closely with the College of Science’s administration and ASUU Senator. Here’s an overview of what you’ll be doing as a Department Committee member:

Impact

As a member of your Department’s Committee, you’ll help decide how thousands of dollars in student funding are spent each semester. You will also have access to funding that can be used to directly benefit your department.
You'll have a voice in decisions that directly impact students' academic experiences and resources.

Networking Opportunities

You'll have opportunities to connect with College of Science and Department administration and collaborate with them on projects.
We'll assist you with expanding your network and understanding of administrative systems within higher education.

Time Commitment

Minimum of 1 hour of scheduled meetings per month, plus some additional time working on projects and communicating with your Department representative.
This volunteer role is highly flexible and will allow you to tailor your involvement to your schedule and interests.

Study Aids

The College Student Council identified a gap in access to essential course materials within the College of Science. These materials included molecular modeling kits, calculators, whiteboard markers, erasers, anatomy models, and physics demonstration materials. With funding from ASUU, the Student Council took action and purchased over $7,000 worth of supplies. These resources are now available for checkout at the Advising Hive in Crocker Science Center, ensuring that students have convenient access to the tools they need to excel in their studies. This initiative highlights the proactive efforts of the Student Council in addressing challenges faced by students within the academic community.

The College Student Council founded committees for all eight departments in the College of Science in order to best represent the needs and interests of all of our students, both within the College and within ASUU.

Sofia Perez

Senator

Hi everyone! My name is Sofia Perez. I am originally from San Antonio, Texas and I am pursuing an H.B.S in Chemistry with an emphasis in Biology, with a minor in Anthropology! I was apart of the 2023 ACCESS Scholars cohort! When I graduate, I hope to get an M.D./Ph.D. I am also currently a research assistant in Dr. Bischak’s lab in the Department of Chemistry where I study the thermal properties of dialkylammonium salts for the purpose of creating more sustainable devices. Additionally, I am also involved in ASUU as the College of Science senate representative, the American Chemical Society as their Social Media Manager, and a Learning Assistant for the Department of Chemistry! Outside of school, I love to crochet, go hiking, and take cool photos of nature. Feel free to say hi if you see me around and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!

Savannah Romney

Hello! I'm Savannah Romney, and I am from Draper, Utah! I am pursuing a Biology HBS with an emphasis in Genetics and Genomics. In the future, I plan on applying to medical school with aspirations of becoming an OB/GYN. I participated in the ACCESS Scholars program and I conducted research in the Parkinson research lab. I love to play golf, hike, and spend time on the beach! I also enjoy reading, crocheting, and spending time with my friends and family.

Merrin Maughan

Hi everyone! My name is Merrin and I'm from Sandy, UT. I'm working towards an H.B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in Neurobiology and a minor in History. After graduating from the U, I plan on pursuing an MD and specializing in neuro-oncology. I currently work in the Olivera Lab, where I focus on characterizing conotoxins, or neurotoxic peptides isolated from cone snails. Outside of the COS, I am a member of the JRP Debate Society here at the U, the Social Service Director for Phi Sigma Rho, and involved with ASUU. In my free time, I love hiking, making (terrible) biology puns, painting, and listening to music! Isabella Gloeckner

Hey guys! I’m Isabella Gloeckner. I’m from Kaysville, Utah, and a senior studying Biochemistry with minors in Classical Civilizations and Pediatric Clinical Research. I currently work in the operating room at the main University Hospital and conduct research in the emergency department at Primary Children’s. After graduating in the spring, I plan to attend medical school, with hopes of pursuing general surgery and engaging in quality improvement (QI) research. I love volunteering at health clinics, being a part of ASUU, and coaching for Girls on the Run in my free time. On weekends, you can find me skiing, traveling, or enjoying any outdoor activity with my friends! I love meeting new people so feel free to reach out anytime

Hi! My name is Alice, and I’m from Salt Lake City and Corning, New York. I am majoring in Chemistry and Applied Mathematics. In addition to doing research in the Whittaker-Brooks lab, I am part of the Association for Women in Mathematics, ASUU, and volunteer at the Student Pride Center. In the future, I hope to go to graduate school for chemistry. Outside of school, I like reading, drawing, baking, and looking at old maps.

Makayla Patrick

Atmospheric Sciences Representative

Hey! My name is Makayla and I am a senior here at the U double majoring in Atmospheric Sciences and Biology. Currently, I work in Dr. Wang’s DYCE lab in the Biology department trying to understand links between deforestation and climate patterns. After graduating I plan to pursue a MS/PhD and continue my research into the connections between the atmosphere and the biosphere! Outside of the Student Council I also serve as the President of the American Meteorological Society Student Chapter. I’m really passionate about building community in the Atmos Department and I’m excited to work with the Student Council to expand this community to the broader COS as well! In my free time I enjoy reading, crocheting, and hiking (mostly collecting cool rocks). I love to chat so feel free to reach out with any questions you have!

Hi! My name is Hannah Johnson, and I'm a sophomore here at the University of Utah. I am originally from Boise, Idaho, but I really enjoy living in Salt Lake City! I'm pursuing an Applied Mathematics major with an Advanced Financial Analysis Minor. I have loved math since I was a kid, so I'm very grateful for the chance to learn more about math every day, and especially thankful for the opportunity to represent the math department on the College of Science College Student Council. Outside of school, I also teach dance at a local dance studio and work at a math tutoring center for kids. Working with kids in both of these settings brings me so much joy! I also love to cook, bake, attend any sporting event, read, and spend time with friends and family!

My role in the student council is to help delegate funds given to the College of Science by ASUU and collaborate with my peers to see where we can use those funds in the physics department. I like to read, kayak, be with my family, and play board games when I am not at school or work. I am beyond excited to get to work with all students and staff in the College of Science, and make the physics department the best it can be!

Metallurgical Engineering Representative

Hi all! My name is Cristian Urbina and I am a Metallurgical Engineering senior emphasizing physical metallurgy. My interest in this field involves material selection in high-temperature applications, additive manufacturing, failure analysis of metal components, and steelmaking. I love teaching people the importance of metals and the wide applications that they are used in. My hobbies include photography, music, visiting national parks, legos, 3D printing, and vinyl collecting.

I also work as a research assistant in Dr. Sigman’s lab within the Chemistry department, focusing on sustainable polymer production methods. After graduating, I plan to complete an MD/PhD and continue my career in research. In my free time, I enjoy running, hiking, canyoneering, and spending time outdoors!

Outside of studying, I work as a lab tech in the Material Characterization Lab and also an EMT at Hogle Zoo. Hi there! I'm Margaret and I am majoring in geoscience (geology emphasis) with minors in chemistry and geography, as well as a GIS certificate. I am also currently doing research in Professor Pete Lippert's lab studying environmental magnetism and what it can tell us about past climate transitions. I am passionate about the environment, climate science, and science communication. I’ve been involved as a 2022 ACCESS Scholar, Crocker Science House Scholar, College of Science Ambassador, Wilkes Scholar, and now the Student Council! If I'm not in class or working in the lab, you can usually find me reading a good book or looking at cool rocks. I'd love to meet you so please say hi!

Eliza Watson

Mining Engineering Representative

Hello! My name is Eliza, and I am a second year Mining Engineering major. I am pursuing an emphasis in Geomechanics & Spacial Analytics as well as a Geology minor. After graduation, I plan to go straight into industry. I hope to work at a mine helping to increase understanding of ore deposits. Someday I would also like to be involved in reclamation (returning a retired mine site to as close to pre-mining conditions as possible). I am part of the 2023 ACCESS Scholars cohort and currently serve as secretary of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration U of U Student Chapter. Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, weight lifting, fishing, and country swing dancing!

Isabella Bartmess

Transfer Student Representative

Hi all! My name is Isabella Bartmess and I’m a fourth year majoring in Biology with an emphasis in Genetics/Genomics. I have fallen completely in love with research, and am lucky enough to work at the Gertz Lab (Huntsman Cancer Institute) investigating the role of a transcription factor subunit, ARID1A, in endometrial oncogenesis. I am becoming a scientist because I believe that mechanistic understandings of gene expression are a powerful tool for reimagining public policy and pursuing social change. I am currently an intern at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy exploring the policy side of science. I am the Transfer Student Representative on the College of Science Student Council and cannot wait to meet more transfer students! Outside of the lab, I love to read, crochet, and boulder.

Hey! My name is Ethan Mouser and I am currently a fourth year here at the University. I am majoring in Biology with a Human Anatomy & Physiology Emphasis, and a minor in Chemistry. I am also in the epilepsy research lab at the Clinical Neurosciences Center. I’m a premed student and will be applying to medical school next year! I love to play soccer, go skiing, go camping, and spend time with my friends and family.

Ella Bleak

Hi everyone! My name is Ella Bleak and I am double majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics. I currently research in Dr. Talia Karasov’s lab studying the mechanisms that tailocins use to target bacteria for the purpose of developing antibiotic alternatives. After graduation I plan to pursue a PhD in Chemical Biology. I am also currently a Beckman Scholar and a College of Science Ambassador. I have previously been involved with ACCESS Scholars and the Honors College Student Advisory Committee. Outside of academics, I love playing video games, building legos, and cooking/baking.

Sam Shaw

Student Success Manager

Sam supports all student-related activities in the College of Science, including recruitment, events, scholarships, petitions, orientation, and social media. She manages the Student Ambassador Program, developing student leaders and providing support for events in the College and its four departments. As the ACCESS Program Manager, Sam recruits applicants, facilitates selections, and manages administrative logistics throughout the year-long scholarship and research program.
